Sunday Notes 11/24/24 + An update

Hello all.

Here are this week's notes.

From me: A note on notes.

This will be the last edition of Sunday Notes in its current form. Allow me to explain.

I feel like this format has expired both creatively and in utility. I had hoped to make it to the 5-year mark, but feel continuing is a disservice to you and I alike. I am taking the rest of the year off.

I will be sending you the roundup edition of Sunday Notes on 12/29/24 — where I recap the most interesting things shared throughout the year. Expect it in your inbox at the normal time.

Come January, I will be moving to Substack with a new format. I'm not sure what it will be called, if anything, but expect sporadic Sunday essays on topics I care deeply about. There will be no curation. It will be me sharing my best writing and no one else's. Writing that I hope can and will stand alone.

What I need from you is this: If you no longer want to hear from me please, do us both a favor and unsubscribe. Link at bottom. There are no hard feelings. I appreciate your willingness to give me your time.

Q&A

I don't want to unsubscribe, do I have to do anything? Nope. I will add you to the new list. You will hear from me soon.

When? On Sundays, just not every Sunday.

How often? 1-2 times per month, I hope, but really, when I have something that needs to be said. A story that needs to be told.

What can I expect? A short to medium-length essay on something that interests me, a topic that may be personal, one I hope invokes curiosity, but mostly words that have meaning.

Do you still write on your personal website? Yes, for now. Longer form pieces that I prefer stand in their own domain.

What else? Emails will no longer be coming from barry@barryfralick.com. Expect next year's emails to be coming from barryfralick@substack.com instead.

Why? Sunday Notes is taking me an increasingly longer amount of time to publish. What I used to produce in a day now takes me two or three. On top of that, I feel like it's repetitive. Like I am polluting your inbox with 'content' offering little benefit. The internet is full of wasteful and unsatiating snacks. I want to give you a meal. I want to show you my best work which, will always be ahead of me but, cannot flourish in this variety.

Thanks to the many of you I have interacted with over the last 4+ years. It has been a pleasure. I look forward to writing you in the new year.

A quote:

The great mass of human beings are not acutely selfish. After the age of about thirty they abandon individual ambition—in many cases, indeed, they almost abandon the sense of being individuals at all—and live chiefly for others, or are simply smothered under drudgery.

Uncertainty dictates nearly everything in the current moment, but looking back we pretend it never existed.

1. Think about what makes you ‘imbalanced’ as a personality, & do things where this gives you an edge.

Lastly, a question: Where do you need to be more confrontational?

Greetings friends. As promised, this is the 2024 roundup edition of Sunday Notes. A review of the most popular finds I have shared throughout the year. I hope you enjoy it. From me: Something to consider as the new year approaches Published in Sunday Notes 5/19/24 Papert's Principle Many of the most vital steps in cognitive growth are based not on learning new things, but on finding new ways to use what we already know. This has been on my mind. Not necessarily mental growth, but the pattern...

Hello friends. Here are this week's notes. From me: Why I write I stole this title from Didion, who stole it from Orwell, because it is on point, meaning that choosing alternate words would be pointless. 'Why I write' is perfect. It is simple. I've felt compelled to write since childhood. I don't know why I was drawn to it when young, but I sense it involved introversion and writing, in general, being highly romanticized on film and television. Writers were weird. Some were cool. They made an...

Greetings friends. Here are this week's notes. From me: A shit show I had a normal schedule planned this week, but nothing went right. A couple of examples: Thursday, some clown dropped a huge bottle of Frank's Red Hot in the middle of Walmart, shattering it and leaving my shoes and pants covered in bright orange hot sauce minutes before I needed to be at an appointment. It was me. I was the clown. Friday, I woke up to an urgent text message from a friend who had a small fire at his business,...
